Common Access Card ready for update

Now that the Defense Department is issuing the last of its first-generation Common Access Cards, the inevitable upgrade cycle is under way.


Mary Dixon, director of the Common Access Card Office at the Defense Manpower Data Center, said the second-generation smart cards may be ready as early as this fall for new entrants and replacement of lost, stolen or worn-out cards.

New features may include contactless chips, new applications and the groundwork for biometric application support.

MasterCard has certified a slew of NFC-enabled smart phones for use with MasterCard PayPass contactless payment technology.

Newly certified devices include: BlackBerry Bold 9790, BlackBerry Curve 9380, HTC One X, Intel Smartphone Reference Device, LG Viper 4G LTE, LG Optimus Elite, Nokia 603, Nokia Lumia 610 NFC, Samsung Wave Y, Samsung Galaxy mini 2, Samsung Galaxy S Advance, Samsung Galaxy Nexus (GT-i9250), Sony Xperia S, Sony Xperia P and Sony Xperia sola.

Smart Packaging Solutions (SPS) announced it is ready to deliver its to smart card products to manufacturers in China.

This, following the Chinese Government, along with People’s Bank of China (PBOC) confirmation that all banking cards in China would use smart card technologies by 2015. PBOC has already published the specification for these cards, called PBOC 2.0, which includes the certification scheme.
