SmartWorldAcademy conducted its first training course on microcontroller smart cards

Thursday, June 3, 2004

ACG Identification GmbH, a leading component and technology supplier in the smart card and RFID markets, announces the completion of the first course conducted by the SmartWorldAcademy, their new training and consultancy center for state-of-the-art smart card applications.

The first three students, who attended a customized three-day training course, came from CETIS, a Slovenian printing company that manufactures plastic cards and passports and is also involved in special projects such as the Slovenian Census. CETIS, the supplier of the current Slovenian passport, is aiming to win one of the e-passport projects that will be implemented in Slovenia and its neighboring countries within this year.

The course designed by the SmartWorldAcademy covered topics such as fundamentals of microcontroller smart card technology, card communication protocols and principles of traditional filesystem oriented operating systems and Javacard, with examples demonstrated on FlashCOS and JCOP 20 respectively.

Comments from CETIS were extremely positive. “Thanks to the support of the SmartWorldAcademy, for the first time we were able to really understand and appreciate the overall system rather than isolated facts”, said the students. “The trainer has sound technical knowledge, presented the relevant topics clearly and established a good working dynamic with the team of students.”

Petr Novák, Director of SmartWorldAcademy, comments, “With the success of our first customized training course, we are now fully prepared to conduct all of the courses that we have originally planned and look forward to welcoming the next students at the end of this month.”

Provider of technical training courses covering hot topics such as PKI, access control, time and attendance, identification and authentication, loyalty and multi-application schemes, as well as international and industry standards for microcontroller and dual interface cards, the SmartWorldAcademy, located in Prague, was launched in February 2004. The vendor independent training center offers courses designed for system integrators, card manufacturers and solution providers.

STMicroelectronic’s CD21-Rev3 microcontroller, used widely in Calyso contactless travel cards, has been validated by FIME as compliant to the EMV Contactless Communication Protocol V2.0.1.

According to ST, the EMV specification describes the minimum functions required for Proximity Integrated Circuit Cards (PICCs) and Proximity Coupling Devices (PCDs) to ensure correct operation and market interoperability. This certification confirms that the Calypso chip is the first to market that supports both transport and payment applications.
