Consumers want convenience and security, look to biometrics

Monday, November 22, 2004

A survey of 1,200 adults in the US found that consumers seek convenience when expecting more secure handling of personal information.

Identity management is mission critical, and going above and beyond the tradition bare-minimum of security measures is just about mandatory at this point if you want to keep your business speeding along.

Over 70% of the respondents to the survey looked to biometric technology as the answer to the dilemma of convenience and security existing harmoniously. Universal IDs were also given signs of approval.

Survey results indicate strong support for the use of biometrics. More than 70% of respondents believe that technologies such as voice recognition or fingerprinting systems would be acceptable. The top reason is convenience. More than 88% of respondents believe biometrics will make identification more convenient and accurate. Among those opposed to biometrics (11%), most appear to be concerned about secondary or alternative uses of this data.
