Regal casts MasterCard PayPass in starring role; usage expands at Ritz, Boater's World

Tuesday, May 3, 2005

Movie theater chain Regal Entertainment, Ritz Camera, and Boater’s World Marine Centers, recently rolled out MasterCard PayPass for their customers. Ritz and Boater’s World both participated in MasterCard’s Orlando trials in 2003.

Regal Entertainment Group, the largest movie theater operator in the world, said it will be the first movie theatre circuit to accept MasterCard PayPass at its Regal Cinemas, United Artist Theatres and Edwards Theatres throughout the United States. MasterCard PayPass was accepted at participating Regal Cinemas in New York City in April with an expanded, national roll-out to other cinema locations to be completed by this summer.

“We continuously seek new opportunities that enhance our customers’ experience when going to the movies,” stated Cliff Marks, president, marketing and sales, Regal CineMedia. “With an innovative payment solution like PayPass, we can deliver added convenience, flexibility and improved service to our customers while at the theatre.”

To purchase a ticket or concession at a Regal Entertainment Group cinema, MasterCard PayPass cardholders simply tap their PayPass-enabled MasterCard card on a specially equipped terminal that utilizes a radio frequency chip to complete the transaction. Payment is completed quickly and easily without the hassle of swiping a card, fumbling for cash, or signing a receipt. Moments after the cardholder taps their PayPass-enabled MasterCard card, account details are communicated to the terminal and then processed through the MasterCard network for clearing and settlement.

“With MasterCard PayPass, movie-goers are afforded the convenience, speed and ease of use that is inherent to this contactless payment option,” said Fred P. Gore, senior vice president, North America Acceptance, MasterCard International.

Ritz Camera Centers announced it will expand MasterCard PayPass acceptance to each of its more than 1,100 Ritz Camera Centers and 114 Boater’s World Marine Centers.

“As customers seek to make shopping faster and more convenient, Ritz Camera and Boater’s World want to provide the best service possible. MasterCard PayPass offers our customers the quality and ease they’ve come to expect from Ritz Camera, Boater’s World and MasterCard,” said David Ritz, Chairman and CEO of Ritz Camera Centers.

“We’re thrilled to expand our relationship nationally with Ritz Camera. The market trial in Orlando provided invaluable insight on the impact MasterCard PayPass has on how consumers pay for purchases as well as concrete benefits retailers enjoy from streamlined transactions,” said Fred P. Gore, senior vice president, North America Acceptance, MasterCard International. “We’re pleased that Ritz Camera and Boater’s World have been added to the list of other category leaders that now offer MasterCard PayPass as a payment option to their customers,” he added.
