Missing OSU laptop leaves 37,000 student SSNs at risk

Another campus is admitting that student social security numbers may have been compromised in mass by a lost or stolen laptop computer. As many as 37,000 current and former students at Oklahoma State University could be impacted. The computer was used by employees conducting job placement seminars for students. The campus will reportedly move more quickly to the already planned migration from SSN to a unique 8-digit ID number.

Personal information of 9,000 current and prospective students was inadvertently posted online by Valencia College in Orlando. The school has apologized for the mistake.

The information included the students’ names, addresses, dates of birth and student ID numbers but not their Social Security numbers or financial information.
