Missing OSU laptop leaves 37,000 student SSNs at risk

Another campus is admitting that student social security numbers may have been compromised in mass by a lost or stolen laptop computer. As many as 37,000 current and former students at Oklahoma State University could be impacted. The computer was used by employees conducting job placement seminars for students. The campus will reportedly move more quickly to the already planned migration from SSN to a unique 8-digit ID number.

The University of Arizona, Tucson, has rolled out a new campus card that includes contactless functionality. The new CatCard will be given to incoming students during student orientation and will be able to do the same things current CatCards can. However, existing students, if they want to upgrade, will have to fork over $25.

A high school in Tarpon Springs, Fla. recently sent out a mass email bearing student Social Security numbers. The school’s guidance counselor sent the email to Tarpon’s entire senior class of about 400 students and parents regarding the Bright Futures Scholarship program.

Student government members at Drew University, Madison, N.J. have successfully negotiated with a school administrator to eliminate the $25 fee for damaged, worn out or defective campus ID cards. Students will still have to pay for lost ID cards.
