The market for RFID software, hardware and services will reach $2,195m in 2005, making for a growth rate of 68% over a market in 2004 reckoned to be worth $1,306m. Revenues from the manufacturing industry were said to be more than all other verticals combined in 2004, and still double any other by 2010 according to market researchers at Datamonitor, ComputerWires parent company, who estimate that by 2010 the global RFID market will top $6,138m. For this reason, vertical expertise from vendors will be a key differentiator between those that are successful, and those that are not.”

Skycore LLC has teamed up with Baltimore-based ticketing service provider MissionTix to pilot its new “codeREADr” Android app for validating NFC-enabled access credentials.

MissionTix will offer their venue clients reusable, rechargeable NFC wristbands that can be used to attend multiple ticketed events. Venue staff can read these wristbands by simply tapping them with an NFC-enabled Android 4.0 device equipped with Skycore’s codeREADr app. The app validates the data embedded in the wristband in real-time against an on-device or online database of authorized values, typically managed by a ticketing company or other service provider on behalf of the venue or merchant.

A smart card pilot project in a Canadian hospital has improved emergency room doctors’ efficiency, cutting down on patient waiting times.

The pilot, being conducted at Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary, began earlier this year, reports CTV. Instead of logging into multiple systems and terminals to get patient information, doctors use smart cards to retrieve these records.
