Michielsen Watch: Industry Moves to Consolidation

“Increasingly, attention is turning to the software that enables RFID data use within the enterprise. New initiatives are flying thick and fast. ABI Research believes that this space is primed for a shakeout in the coming six to nine months. There will be rollups, acquisitions and consolidation, as the need for more focused RFID-related software and applications grows.”

The Basque National Health System has launched a neonatal security system designed to monitor and protect new-born infants using RFID technology.

When a pregnant woman is admitted to hospital, she is provided a tag with a unique identification which can be read in all the maternity zones. When the baby is born, an RFID tag specially designed for the new born is fitted to its ankle. The device monitors the infant 24 hours a day, detecting unauthorized movements, registering entries and exits to and from and enabling immediate location information.

Laks has announced the commercial launch of its watch2pay contactless-enabled wristwatch in the UK.

Equipped with MasterCard’s PayPass technology, the watch can be used to make contactless purchases of up to £15 in more than 70,000 UK retailers now accepting PayPass payments.

British Columbia is moving forward with plans to upgrade its CareCard program. According to The Vancouver Sun, the new card will provide access to a variety of regional services including electronic health records, driver license and school registration for children.

Sticking to its plan for a contactless rollout in 2012, Australian retailer Coles has selected Ingenico to provide its Ingenico iPP350 contactless payment terminals.

According to finextra.com, the Aussie retailer first piloted the technology in September 2011, and has since decided to expand. All business groups will deploy the new iPP350 across 24,000 lanes within the next few months, making the retailer one of the first in Australia to offer the contactless payment option.
