RFID Luggage-Tagging Pilot Begins

Baggage handling: a real pain in the you-know-what.

You get off the plane, hurry to some big conveyor belt (you’re paranoid someone’s gonna snatch your not-so-one-of-a-kind, black canvas), and wait around, searching for that little red ribbon you tied to the handle.

Perhaps a little RFID could make it easier?

If you’re flying from ‘Frisco to Seoul, then yes. A San Francisco airport is using luggage tags, in a six-month pilot with Asiana Airlines, Korean Air and Incheon International Airport to improve this haphazard process.

On Tuesday, an SFO commission approved plans from the two airlines to test an RFID baggage-tracking system. [end] 

The South African Ministry of Home Affairs announced the expansion of its smart ID card pilot program, reports IT Web.

According to Home Affairs director-general Mkuseli Apleni, the smart ID card program is part of an effort by the national government to shed its racist past and create one identification card for all citizens. It will replace the current civic and immigration identity systems and capture demographic and biometric data of all South Africans and foreign nationals.

The U.S. Army has decided to extend it smart card pilot program for Army spouses and retirees. The pilot, which began in October 2011, now runs through September.
