So long, RFID Bill, Says Schwarzenegger

Wednesday, October 4, 2006

The wires are going nuts now that the Terminator-turned-Governor vetoed the Sen. Joe Simitian’s controversial RFID bill that would have imposed a moratorium on infusing government IDs with RFID.

The state bill would have placed serious limitations on the use of RFID throughout the state. The decision should pump up the pace of RFID adoption in California, where some projects had stalled while the bill’s fate was being determined.

The bill contradicts the premise of the federal Real ID Act, Mr. Schwarzenegger said.

However, Mr. S said “yes” to a WiFi bill in the name of protecting privacy.

The new bill calls for labeling WiFi routers with security warning stickers to make sure that even the most clueless of consumers is instructed in how to activate security settings on new equipment.  [end]
