Monday, October 9, 2006

The U.S. Department of Defense has tapped Oberthur Card Systems to supply it with its first dual interface (contact/contactless) 64K ID cards that will meet HSPD-12 requirements.

SAN DIEGO–Adding to the more than two million smart IDs it already provides the U.S. Department of Defense, Oberthur Card Systems, the leading smart card supplier to the Government ID market, will provide them with their 64K dual interface smart card. This is the U.S. federal government’s first large volume order for a smart ID card that has the flexibility of requiring contact or being contactless. The technology offers the highest level of credentialing security.

“Oberthur is a technology innovator with an established track record in high volume production which makes us a preferred partner to support U.S. government ID and security directives such as the HSPD 12 directive and the many new federal and state ID and security initiatives that go to securing access to our ports, transportation hubs and borders,” noted Philippe Tartavull, President of Oberthur Card Systems of America.

Oberthur has supplied access and ID cards to over two million DoD employees and contractors to date and is the only company in the U.S. to offer an identification solution that couples smart card manufacturing with card personalization, carrier attachment and phone activation services, as well as the exclusive rights to the card software applets. Oberthur’s U.S. production capacity allows it to produce more than 200 million cards a year and can meet the growing demand within federal, state and local government for smart IDs. Additionally, all Oberthur smart card products for the government market are FIPS certified and are produced at ISO 9001-certified facilities.
