Playing tetris on an EMV terminal

File under Internet buzz … techno sites are ranting over the University of Cambridge Computer Lab ‘experiment’ that converted a chip and pin (EMV) terminal into a tetris (video game) player. As is always the case in these types of situations, controversy surrounds the reality and the impacts of such a hack. Does it suggest critical security weaknesses or is it simply a really bad video game?

First Data and Austria-based organic foods supermarket chain, denn’s Biomarkt have partnered to introduce contactless card acceptance at denn’s Biomarkt stores.

The organic supermarket selected First Data to renew its point-of-sale terminal infrastructure with the installation of contactless payment readers. Using contactless technology, customers are offered greater speed and convenience at the check-out.

ROAM Data has announced a new point of sale (POS) reader that can handle both traditional magnetic stripe cards and NFC-enabled contactless devices.

According to ROAM, the “NFC Swipe” reader can connect via audio jack to hundreds of different smart phones, tablets and PCs, turning them into secure state-of-the-art mobile POS devices.

New Jersey Transit’s use of NFC payments with Google Wallet has been an “overwhelming and resounding success,” according to NJ Transit spokesman John Durson.

Introduced on the NJ Transit network in October 2011, Google Wallet enables riders to purchase tickets with the tap of an NFC-enabled phone at New York Penn Station, Newark Liberty Airport’s rail station and on 7 city bus lines.
