Intermec's Spruced-Up Reader Makes The Grade

Thursday, February 1, 2007

It’s fixed, smart, and highly sensitive.

And that’s why ODIN Technologies is calling Intermec’s IF5 RFID Reader a “top performer,” Intermec reported.

The IF5 was rated comparable or superior to top performing competitive readers, matched the read rate – number of tags read per unit time – of the fastest competitor and scored in the “highly sensitive” reader category, according to a press release.

Newly Upgraded Intermec IF5 RFID Reader Named a Top Performer by ODIN technologies

Intermec Inc. announced that its newly upgraded IF5 Fixed RFID Reader was ranked the top performer in adjacent dock door use by U.S. RFID testing lab ODIN technologies.

Upgraded to read more tags per second and deliver increased radio frequency sensitivity and reliability, the IF5 was rated comparable or superior to top performing competitive readers, matched the read rate – number of tags read per unit time – of the fastest competitor and scored in the “highly sensitive” reader category.

The Intermec IF5 is a fixed “smart” reader that can run business intelligence and decision making processes at the point of activity, filter information from tags, monitor external sensors and control audible/visual indicators. Users implementing the reader avoid the expense and potential point of failure of a separate server “box” required by other RFID scanning solutions. As with all Intermec reader products, the IF5 both reads and writes to ISO and Gen 2 RFID tags.

“The new IF5 dense reader mode implementation performs exceptionally well,” said Christopher Fennig, Director, Professional Services, ODIN technologies. “Its leading performance in both the adjacent door and conveyor applications makes the new IF5 one of the best overall readers in its class. Intermec’s engineering investment in addressing the more stringent European environment is paying off.”

The Intermec IF5 reader is based on an EPCglobal Gen 2-certified radio module for operation within ETSI and FCC requirements – the only module in its class to pass both EPC compatibility and interoperability tests. As a feature-rich Gen 2 network reader, the IF5 allows users to read tags from any manufacturer. Additionally, it can act as an edge server, performing on-board decision-making and data filtering and therefore does not overburden the host with redundant or unwanted data.

By leveraging its built-in device management system for reader configuration and delivery of firmware and applications, the IF5 can assist in scaling an enterprise’s RFID system.

Atmel Corp. announced availability of an AVR microcontroller (MSU) with an RFID reader block and 16kBytes of in-system self-programmable flash.

The Atmel ATA5505 is one of the industry’s first MCU that features full low-frequency (LF) RFID reader functionality within a single package, unlike others where the MCU and RFID reader are located in two different packages. This translates into customers being able to develop and manufacture small, low-cost reference PCBs for various reader types.
