UK's struggles with national ID cards continue amid political uncertainty

Amongst rumors and speculation that Gordon Brown (Chancellor of Finance, and soon to be Prime Minister of the United Kingdom) will abandon the UK’s ID card scheme once Prime Minister, he has been asked to confirm his position on the plan. Many people are calling for the government to abandon the ID card scheme, citing increasing privacy and security concerns and escalating costs. However, the Liberal Democrats believe Mr. Brown will retain ID cards once prime minister. Home affairs spokesman Nick Clegg said the raft of criticisms levied at the scheme sees the government change its justification every month. [end] 

HSBC announced that it will begin the conversion to contactless technology this month, replacing all customer banking debit cards, according to ThinkMoney.com.

The bank will start to roll out the new contactless cards to existing customers whose debit cards are due to expire this month and then continue the process as cards expire. Customers who don’t want a contactless card can opt out by contacting their bank before their current card expires.
