NFC patents now available through licensing program

INSIDE Contactless recently made its patents that were “deemed essential” to Near Field Communication (NFC) available for licensing through Via Licensing Corporation, which develops and administers patent licensing programs on behalf of innovative technology companies and for the convenience of licensees. The INSIDE Contactless patents are necessary for all devices which are or are trying to become compliant with ISO 18092 and ISO 21481. “The availability of INSIDE’s NFC patents in the Via Licensing program…illustrates INSIDE’s commitment to support the NFC market deployment in a non-proprietary approach for the benefit of the entire eco-system,” says Remy de Tonnac, CEO of INSIDE Contactless.

Aix-En-Provence, France, June 5th, 2007–INSIDE Contactless, a world leader for contactless semiconductor chips and hardware platforms, today announced that it has made its patents deemed essential to Near Field Communication (NFC) as practiced by devices which are compliant with ISO 18092 (equal to ECMA-340) and ISO 21481 (equal to ECMA-352 referencing ISO 14443 A and B as used in NFC applications) available for licensing through Via Licensing Corporation, which develops and administers patent licensing programs on behalf of innovative technology companies and for the convenience of licensees.

NFC is a short-range, standards-based wireless connectivity technology that allows consumers to perform safe and contactless transactions, access digital content, and connect electronic devices with a single touch.

The joint licensing program is designed to provide convenient access to essential patents for the practice of NFC. These licenses cover NFC-compliant consumer electronic devices, like mobile phones, as well as commercial devices like payment processing terminals, transportation terminals and vending machines.

The U.S. government has settled an infringement case with Leighton Technologies by agreeing to license its smart cards.

Leighton Technologies, a subsidiary of General Patent, filed a case against the federal government in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in January 2010. Leighton alleged that 54 federal agencies used its six smart card patents without authorization. Leighton’s technology was also used in e-passports.

Dolcera Corporation has released a patent repository for NFC technology.

According to Dolcera, the new report provides a layout of “essential patents” that enable the use of the NFC technology based on ISO/IEC 14443, ECMA-340 and ECMA-352 standards, as well as the patents that are used to deliver NFC-enabled applications to consumers.

Google has acquired 188 patents and 29 patents pending from IBM, some of which concern NFC technology, reports ZDNet.

Adding to the 2,053 IBM patents already turned over to Google in the past year, these new patents cover databases, mobile phones, server infrastructure, wireless telephone systems, NFC and other patents that may relate to Google’s Android mobile operating system.

Stevenson High School, Lincolnshire, Ill., is piloting a program that can track students on school buses. The goal is to increase safety while determining more efficient bus routes. The school rolled out the program in late January that provides each student with a card that the student uses as he enters or exits a school bus.
