Readers enable secure logical access in any environment

FREMONT, Calif., June 20, 2007 – SCM Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCMM, Prime Standard: SMY), a leading provider of solutions that open the Digital World, today announced that its SCR3310v2.0 smart card reader has been approved by the U.S. Government Services Administration (GSA) as compliant with Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD)-12. As a result, the SCR3310v2.0 smart card reader is now included on the GSA’s FIPS 201 Approved Product List that governs which products and services may be purchased by federal agencies for the HSPD-12 program.

SCM’s SCR3310v2.0 is suitable for a wide range of applications, including network security, secure logon, email encryption, home banking, e-loyalty, e-healthcare, and others. Leveraging more than a decade of experience including more than ten million readers shipped worldwide, the new USB reader complements SCM’s existing reader portfolio while adding support for all relevant security standards, including support for all ISO 7816 class A, B and C smart cards (i.e., 5V, 3V, and 1.8V smart cards). Its unique and flexible architecture prevent obsolescence by allowing support for new or additional cards in the field while protecting the integrity of the product. The SCR3310v2.0 also offers the fastest transfer rate available among comparable readers.

Under presidential order HSPD-12, all government employees and contractors are required to carry a standard identity credential for secure physical and logical access that works across all federal agencies and departments. To satisfy the technical requirements of HSPD-12, the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) developed the U.S. federal government standard Federal Information Processing Standards Publication 201 (FIPS 201), which specifies the personal identification requirements for all persons to be affected. The FIPS 201 certification now enables SCM Microsystems to supply government agencies and contractors, including the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, Department of State, Department of Interior, and all other federal agencies, with its SCR3310v2.0 reader for secure logical access to networks and PCs.

“With the approval of SCR3310v2.0, SCM now has 13 readers on the GSA FIPS 201 list, reflecting both the breadth of our product line and the depth of our commitment to the HSPD-12 program,” said Dietmar Wendling, Vice President Marketing of SCM Microsystems. “The list includes SCM readers and terminals both for physical and logical access, across government agencies. As the security environment of the government sector continues to evolve, we will continue to focus on developing innovative access control products that address both the requirements of our customers and emerging industry standards.”
