Thursday, August 23, 2007

South Western Railway staff in Bangalore will soon be switching from an ID card-based security system to a biometric system using thumb impressions. There are about 800 employees affected by the change. Closed-circuit television cameras are also being introduced at all concourses and entry points into the complex and uses a Digital Video Recorder (DVR)-based surveillance system with 48 channels of real-time video input. The complex also houses the central offices of railway operations which require high security measures. [end]

Southern Railway announced it is bringing its smart card scheme, called “the key,” to stations between Brighton and Bexhill/Eastboard via Lewes.

The new smart card technology is environmentally friendly - an alternative to paper tickets - while also making it easier and quicker for passengers to buy and use tickets. The smart card is reusable and can be recharged again and again with weekly and monthly season tickets.
