Registered Traveler program criticized for slow progress

The Registered Traveler program has been criticized for not really speeding up the process at airport security but simply allowing members to “go to the head of the line.” The Transportation Security Administration has not yet allowed shoe scanners to be integrated into the security checkpoint process as promised with the RT program. Also, Clear members have complained that after they swipe their biometric cards at the kiosk, they are still required to present a driver’s license with photograph or other standard government identity card to a federal screener at the checkpoint a few feet away because the biometric ID card is not yet accepted by the TSA. There are now more than 80,000 Registered Traveler members who have access to special Registered Traveler lanes operated by three companies at 14 airports.

Parkmobile USA has announced that its mobile payments solution is now available on all parking meters throughout Oakland, Calif.

Oakland drivers can now pay for parking with their mobile phone using the Parkmobile app on iPhone, Android, Windows 7, and Blackberry smart phones anywhere in the city. Users can also pay for parking by tapping their NFC phone against a Parkmobile NFC-enabled sticker on the meter.

The Lee County School District in southwest Florida is the latest to experiment with palm scanners in an effort to move the lunch line along faster. Students currently have to key in their ID number. If they make a mistake, it can slow down the line.

New Jersey Transit’s use of NFC payments with Google Wallet has been an “overwhelming and resounding success,” according to NJ Transit spokesman John Durson.

Introduced on the NJ Transit network in October 2011, Google Wallet enables riders to purchase tickets with the tap of an NFC-enabled phone at New York Penn Station, Newark Liberty Airport’s rail station and on 7 city bus lines.
