RFID network infrastructure company Reva Systems today announced the opening of its first Asia Pacific office in Tokyo, Japan.

Serving as regional headquarters for Reva’s sales and technical operations, the Tokyo office allows Reva to support accelerating RFID deployments among key customers and channel partners in the Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) region.

Reva’s Asian-based team will include sales, business development, marketing, systems engineering and customer support resources. The office is led by Reva’s Vice President of Asia Pacific and Japan sales, Satoshi Shiba. Shiba most recently was regional director and then general manager of Voltaire Ltd. in Tokyo.

Asia tops e-ID list

Asian countries will be the biggest consumer’s of electronic credentials, according to IMS Research’s electronic government and health care card Opportunity Matrix.

IMS Research’s provides a ranking for the opportunity offered for suppliers of electronic government and healthcare ID cards for the leading 15 countries. The scores are calculated using a formula that is based on the projected number of smart cards/credentials shipped into national ID, passports, driver licenses and health care cards in 2016. The formula also takes into account the level of risk of cancellation/delay associated with each project.

KT: 20 million Koreans will have NFC phones this year

KT Corporation, Korea’s largest teleco, is predicting that 20 million NFC-enabled phones will be in the hands of South Koreans by the end of 2012 – accounting for nearly 40% of the country’s total population, according to NFC World.

SML launches 'ViziT' solutions for apparel, partners with TAGSYS and Nedap Retail

SML Group Ltd announced the launch of its new “ViziT” RFID item visibility solutions for the retail apparel and item tracking applications.

The ViziT solutions include a range of RFID/EAS enabled paper and woven labels, as well as tickets and sticker that can be attached to garments and stacked items. Using the SML ViziT IT cloud based data management software also provides for semi automated inventory control, as well as improved loss prevention by triggering alarms and item identification at the store exit.

TSA adds airports for expedited traveler program

Department of Homeland Security Sec. Janet Napolitano and Transportation Security Administration Administrator John S. Pistole announced the expansion of TSA PreCheck, a passenger pre-screening initiative, to additional airports across the country following the program’s success at seven pilot locations.

Asian smart card manufacturers gaining ground on European rivals

Major growth in developing markets over the last two years has allowed smaller Asian vendors, such as Eastcompeace, Watchdata, Datang, and Wuhan Tianyu, to increase their market share to 16% in 2010, up from just 12.4% in 2009.
