Is a student ID card linked to a debit card made possible by the college’s relationship with a bank hurting the students? That’s one of the questions USA Today asked in its article available here. The issues cited focus on overdraft fees charged to students and whether the campus is “promoting” these fees by selecting bank partners based on the level of financial return committed to the campus.

Meanwhile, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (see story here) announced that his office is examining whether college students are being harmed by their schools’ partnerships with banks that offer debit and credit cards.

American Express rolls out prepaid cards at Barnes and Noble college bookstores

American Express has launched its Campus Edition prepaid card, a reloadable card available at more than 500 Barnes & Noble college bookstores across the United States. The card will provide college students with a spending and budgeting tool that can be used wherever American Express Cards are accepted.

Security breach at New York college puts credit cards at risk

If you want to use a credit or debit card at College of Brockport dining halls, forget it. Until the end of the school term, it’s mostly cash only due to a security breach which affected hundreds of credit and debit cards from students, staff and faculty.

U.S. Bank rolls out campus ID, prepaid MasterCard at Michigan community college

U.S. Bank and Oakland Community College, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., have launched a combined campus ID and prepaid MasterCard program for the school’s 78,000 students and 788 staff members.

Higher One adds new checking account options

Higher One expanded its checking account options for college students. Previously checking accounts were only offered to current customers but new customers can now have immediate access to three checking account choices tailored to suit the banking behavior of college students.

Credit cards discouraged at one Iowa university

If you want to use a credit card to pay your tuition at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, be prepared to pay more. In addition to the 4.11% tuition hike, which recently went into effect, students will now have to pay an extra 2.75% surcharge if they use a credit card.

Higher One signs 25+ new contracts, 10 renewals in fourth quarter

Higher One announced that it has added more than 25 new schools that will utilize its refund disbursement services and renewed contracts for 10 existing customers during the fourth quarter of 2011. The company now services about 200,000 more students.
