The British government will begin testing facial-recognition technology at airports in the United Kingdom this summer. Individuals who hold new passports issued by the United Kingdom or European Union will be eligible to participate in the trial.

Participants will pass through unmanned gates, where their faces will be scanned electronically, and those facial images will be matched with the digitized photos on record. If the image is verified, the passenger will be allowed to proceed through the gate. The test is one of the first conducted globally to demonstrate the viability of facial-recognition technology to verify the identities of travelers at airports.

New airport e-gate supports multimodal biometrics

Vision-Box, a biometrics solutions provider, has come out with an automatic border control e-gate that supports multimodal biometric authentication.

This new e-gate is a thin system that contains vb i-match, a single sourced design that is modular and flexible and can be adapted to business requirements and infrastructure constraints that would otherwise disrupt passenger flow. It has the ability to cope with industry standards such as ICAO. The e-gate supports iris, fingerprint and facial biometrics.

DigitalPersona adds facial recognition to authentication software

DigitalPersona Inc. released a new version of its DigitalPersona Pro Enterprise software that includes facial recognition as a method for authentication.

Facial recognition can now be combined with fingerprint biometrics, passwords, PINs, proximity cards, smart cards and OATH tokens for a multi-factor authentication solution. Policy creation and enforcement works through a client’s existing Active Directory infrastructure.

Dubai rolling out automated border crossing

Travelers into Dubai International Airport will have the option of using an automated border crossing checkpoint, according to GulfNews.com.

Initially deployed in Terminal three, but expected to be rolled out throughout the airport, the system will read the passports and check the facial image and iris against a watch list. The entire process takes about 15 seconds.

ImageWare enhances identity management biometrics for points-of-access

Multimodal biometric security provider ImageWare Systems Inc. has released version 2.0 of its Biometric Engine (BE) physical security identification product.

This product is designed for airports, seaports and other critical points-of-access for government and private enterprises. This update takes into account the SAFE Port Act, which requires foreign shippers to secure cargo being shipped to the U.S. and ensure the identity of those loading it. Shippers must manage this by 2013.

Singapore immigration implementing mobile verification

Singapore’s Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) plans to implement a mobile biometric screening device system to help its inland enforcement operations combat illegal immigrants.

As reported in the Straits Times and Today Online, the ICA is investing in MAVIS, the Mobile Automated Verification and Identification System. The handheld system can perform ID and fingerprint and facial recognition biometrics screening without having to bring a suspect into an office.

Australia implements biometrics to fight visa fraud

Australia’s Immigration Ministry has implemented the use of biometric recognition tools such as facial scans, fingerprints and DNA to fight fraudulent visa applications, reports The Daily Telegraph.
