The Port Authority of Los Angeles has contracted with Unisys Corp. to design and manage an identification and access control system, using smart card and biometric technologies, to identify workers who require access to restricted areas in the port.

The three-year contract is part of the federal Transportation Worker Identification Credentials program. Workers enrolled in the pilot would present a card to a biometric-enabled reader and place a finger on a reader at all entrances. The readers then compare the cardholder to stored biometrics and automatically grant or deny access. Under the contract, Unisys is to plan, design, develop and manage a field test of the new system and help participating terminal operators integrate TWIC-enabled access control systems using a tamper-resistant credential or smart card which will contain biometrics (fingerprint) and digital photograph.

GAO releases Wiegand-to-Ethernet RFID controller

GAO RFID has released a Wiegand-to-Ethernet RFID controller designed specifically for door access applications.

The network access controller, model 491018, is able to connect to any type of Wiegand reader such as magnetic stripe reader, RFID reader or fingerprint reader. It also offers a master card for adding or deleting access privileges directly from the external reader, thus acting independently without connection to a network or PC.

U-Pass contract prevents dropout students from keeping transit benefits

Biometrics, smart cards for physical access at LA-area airports

The Los Angeles World Airports, which oversees airport operations for the city of Los Angeles, has awarded a contract modification to Unisys to upgrade its access control and alarm monitoring system that is used to identify the 45,000 airport employees, contractors, police and others who work at the organization’s three airports.

Unisys opens border crossing system in El Paso

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency is working together with Unisys Corp. on a Land Border Integration (LBI) project to deploy one of the first pedestrian border crossings in El Paso, Texas.
