Redesigned Chicago Card allows for easier identification, building access

The University of Chicago has launched an “improved version” of its Chicago Card for faculty, staff and students. The new design features a vertical orientation, allowing it to be attached to a lanyard. Also, most of the information previously included on the front of the card, such as the library bar code and the ID number, will now be on the card’s back.

“The new Chicago ID card is the result of an extensive, collaborative effort across campus to create a card that enables improved identification and university affiliation for card-holders,” a college IT official told the University of Chicago Chronicle. Read more here[end] 

The General Services Administration (GSA) has implemented its first cloud-based physical access system at the Neal Smith Federal Building in Des Moines, Iowa.

The GSA contracted with BridgePoint Systems to utilize its TrustAlert Physical Access Control Systems. BridgePoint partnered with EmbarkIT to install the system, which replaced the GSA’s 10-year-old legacy system. The system leverages the GSA’s Kansas City, Missouri-based WAN and remote IT infrastructure, which allows the building to shrink its carbon footprint.

Kraft has rolled out vending machines in Chicago and New York that give out free pudding samples to adults. The machines estimate the age of the individual by using facial recognition technology, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

The University of British Columbia has begun the transition to a contactless smart card to access every building and lab on campus.

The iClass UBC card contains an embedded chip which is used to securely open doors when tapped against hotspots located at the building and lab entrances. The card on the hotspot will communicate with campus system software, pull up the students and staff individual profile, and allow them access to the building if they’re authorized to do so.

OTA Training has announced that it is bringing its “NFC Bootcamp” educational series to Chicago in November after a successful debut in New York.

According to OTA, NFC Bootcamp shows companies how they can leverage NFC technology in their advertising and marketing campaigns to engage their customers in new and exciting ways. Thanks to the success of the New York event, OTA has been asked to do another in Chicago, according to the company.
