Thursday, June 26, 2008

A school in the UK has started using fingerprint scanners to replace cash for students at the cafeteria, according to a This is Cornwall article. This new system has done away with past problems of lost or stolen money as well as issues of embarrassment for students who qualify for the free lunch program by allowing students to simply swipe their finger on a reader to debit an account.

The participating students register fingerprints into the system, which is stored in the school’s secured server. Once a student is signed up for the program, their parents can control how much money is in their account as well as how much they can spend on a daily basis through a secure area on the school’s homepage.

This school is one of the many school’s throughout the UK that has begun employing biometrics to meet a variety of solutions. Since biometrics in schools began in 2001 over 6,000 students have participated in the programs and each week another twenty schools sign up.
