Snapper card delayed

The launch of New Zealand’s Snapper card has been delayed yet again, according to reports in The Dominion Post. The Snapper card is a contactless smart card that investor Infratil hopes will become more widely used than conventional debit cards.

Infratil has set up a subsidiary, Snapper Services, to market the cards. Snapper Services has teamed up with ANZ National Bank to ensure Snapper cards can be used as debit cards. To accept Snapper, retailers would need a point-of-sale terminal with a contactless card reader.


The system can also be used on public transportation systems. Bus passengers will be given a 20% discount if they use Snapper instead of cash. Snapper is similar in concept to London’s Oyster cards and the Octopus card in Hong Kong.

Cardholders will be able to refill Snapper cards by credit card over the Internet by inserting the card into a USB device that plugs into a computer.

Participants in the Outgames, a major international gay and lesbian sport, culture and human rights event, will receive contactless personalized ID cards for payment and transport around Wellington.

CVS/pharmacy is looking to bring its ExtraCare loyalty rewards system to smart phones, according to the Chain Drug Review.

The pharmacy chain has a mobile app in the works that will allow CVS customers to store their ExtraCare card information on their smart phones, enabling them to collect and redeem rewards by presenting their phone at the point of sale.

SmartPay has announced that it will add Snapper payments, Aukland’s contactless transit card, to its retail network via the company’s PAX EFTPOS terminal range.

According to SmartPay CEO Andrew Donaldson, accepting Snapper payments is a “logical extension” for the company, which boasts New Zealand’s largest client base for mobile and hospitality payments.

Mobile operator 2degrees has partnered with contactless transit card provider Snapper to bring NFC payments to the city of Wellington, New Zealand.

The new “Touch2Pay” service is now available on 2degrees’ LG Optimus Net phones, which can be used to make tap and go payments wherever Snapper cards are accepted, including buses, taxis, shops and cafes.

Snapper is introducing a new contactless payment card designed especially for Auckland’s forthcoming integrated ticketing system, according to Stuff.co.nz.

Snapper’s new card, co-branded with Auckland Transport, will conform to the New Zealand Transit Agency’s new national standards for public transport payment cards and readers.
