UAE to protect country entry with face biometrics

Starting with the international airport in the country’s capital, Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates has started installation of a new biometric security system at all points of entry to their country, according to a Hindustan Times article.

The new system works off of face recognition biometrics and will identify all those entering the country from a distance without their active participation through a series of cameras capturing footage of people.


By comparing certain facial features captured by the cameras with those on a database, the UAE should be able to verify threats before they are problematic.

The system identifies individuals through a number of facial features including eyes, nose, cheekbones and jaw shape, size and position; additionally, it can verify an identity from a number of camera angles including profile.

The International Biometric and Identification Association released a paper that proposes best practices for use of facial recognition in consumer applications.

While the new consumer and commercial applications of face detection and face recognition technologies – such as social media and digital signage – can be positive and beneficial to consumers, they must be deployed with utmost sensitivity to the privacy of the consumer and general public, according to IBIA and Joseph Atick. Atick is one of the original inventors of face recognition technology and is vice chairman at the IBIA.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Global Entry program is expanding enabling enrolled U.S. citizens to enjoy expedited screening when returning from travel abroad to a number of domestic airports. The program also makes them eligible to participate in similar programs at foreign airports.

Gartner Group’s 2012 Magic Quadrant for unique and innovative user authentication products features Equifax’s multifactor authentication product Anakam TFA Two Factor Authentication.
