Imation introduces tape labeling system

Wednesday, August 13, 2008

Imation Corp. has launched its enhanced DataGuard rf Tape Tracking System for tape cartridge storage. The DataGuard rf system is designed to improve the efficiency and reliability of library audits and cartridge check-in/check-out processes, as well reduce the risk of lost and misfiled tapes via an automatic notification system.

The system uses Imation’s new integrated RFID Volume and Serial Number (Vol-Ser) Labels, combining RFID technology, volume-and-serial-number identification and UHF support in an open system that works with any tape management platform.

Each Vol-Ser label incorporates Imation’s custom-designed antenna with a read range of up to six feet for a single cartridge and up to two feet for a case of 20 cartridges. The labels operate globally, so tapes can be shipped worldwide with a single tag type. The new labels are fully EPC compliant and meet environmental, drop, abrasion and load/unload industry standards for data center libraries.

The Dataguard rf system also includes a dual-functioning Motorola 9090G handheld reader that reads both the new RFID labels and existing bar codes, so clients can actively use the system while transitioning their libraries to the new labels. [end]
