New identity created for students at one Illinois college

Northern Illinois University students checking how well they’re doing academically will no longer see their Social Security numbers staring back at them when they log on to their MyNIU Web site.

Instead of an SSN, the DeKalb, Ill. school has assigned a new eight-digit number to each student. This new student ID will also be sent out on transcripts in place of SSNs. A masked birth date with just the day and month of birth showing will also be utilized on the transcript to protect against age discrimination when students apply for jobs. As one administrator said, this is all part of the school’s “proactive approach toward protecting student identity.”

Students from the Art Institute of California, San Bernardino, have joined other students from other area colleges in using their ID cards to ride the local Omnitrans buses. With a simple swipe of their card, students can ride the buses at anytime on any route, not just to and from campus.

U.S. Bank and Oakland Community College, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., have launched a combined campus ID and prepaid MasterCard program for the school’s 78,000 students and 788 staff members.

The Student Congress at Doane College, Crete, Neb., is pursuing a declining balance meal plan that would enable students to carry money on their ID cards. Students could then purchase individual items rather than be locked into using one of their meal credits for an entire meal.

If you want to use a credit or debit card at College of Brockport dining halls, forget it. Until the end of the school term, it’s mostly cash only due to a security breach which affected hundreds of credit and debit cards from students, staff and faculty.
