Biometric program nabs suspected rapist

Australian, British and U.S. agencies worked together to help find a suspected rapist who fled Australia to Britain in 2006, according an Australian IT article. Thanks to fingerprints collected by the U.S. when the man was traveling through the country and the new biometric passport program in the UK, a match was found in an old rape case from Australia even though the man had been successfully living under an assumed name in Britain. The offender is in custody and waiting to appear in court.

Two Texas police departments have successfully used live fingerprint scans to serve a warrant in conjunction with a 15-year-old murder case.

The Carrollton and Lewisville, Tex. police departments used Plano-based Mentalix Inc.’s Submit live scan system to nab the suspect, Danny Elenilson Osorio. Lewisville police officers stopped Osorio in March on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Osorio gave a fake name and birth date, and police arrested him and took him to the Lewisville jail.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has developed and published a new protocol for devices to capture biometric data wirelessly and securely using Web services.

The British Home Office has expanded its Biometric Residence Permit program to include more immigration categories.

The changes, which took effect on Feb. 29, make the biometric residence permits mandatory for anyone who’s applying to stay in the UK for more than six months, as well as those who apply for “indefinite leave to remain” status.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security awarded Accenture Federal Services a 13-month, $71 million contract to add biometric modalities and other enhancements to the US-VISIT program. US-VISIT uses digital fingerprints and photographs. A pilot program included in the contract will test facial and iris voluntary identification enrollment and matching.
