Motorola unveils biometrics for handhelds

Motorola has announced the addition of biometric identity verification devices to their line of MC70 and MC75 enterprise digital assistants (EDA), according to a Hardware Zone article. The new solution is targeted, among other industries, at law enforcement, border control, and military industries for the EDA’s rugged build and the now added ability to use the device’s to properly identify people on-site.


In addition to the Mobile Automated Fingerprint Identification System that is installed on the EDAs, there is also the option for having contact and contact-less smart card readers installed as well opening the computers to the possibility of being used for anything from e-passports to employee smart ID cards. The devices have been rigorously tested to ensure their survival through rugged conditions that different intended purposes for them entail.

Oracle has released a new version of Oracle Retail Point-of-Service that aims to increase security, operational efficiency and functionality in part by integrating biometrics.

Oracle partnered with DigitalPersonal to add integrated biometrics to the POS package. Users of the software will login using their fingerprint, which will replace the need for PINs or passwords. This feature intends to reduce fraud by eliminating the possibility of unauthorized employees using a manager ID or swipe card to access the POS and approve overrides.

The Motorola Solutions’ Validated Solution Program includes joint testing at the Motorola Solution Center in Holtsville, New York. MOBILE software provides bar code and smart card reading to identify and track personnel and companies at an incident, emergency or field event.
