Fitchburg State College in Massachusetts is taking its OneCard program off-campus, giving students, faculty and staff more buying opportunities. The move is also expected to boost business for local merchants. Currently, the card is used to buy books and food on campus, in the library and to gain entrance to events.
“They live by it,” said one administrator of the OneCard. Last year, $250,000 was deposited into OneCard accounts. Merchants wishing to accept the card must first be approved by the college. Currently, several restaurants and pharmacies have signed up.
The program was recently outlined by the city’s mayor, who commented that looks “forward to seeing the impact on the walking traffic downtown.”
