NFC still a ways off

NFC payments finished a distant sixth among wireless providers when asked to rank their investment priorities this year. That’s according to a joint survey of RCR Wireless News and The Yankee Group which found that even contactless payments finished in fourth place. Remote commerce was ranked first, followed by mobile banking, then mobile coupons according to the U.S.-dominant survey.

However, that will likely change next year. “Even though NFC payments received the lowest number of responses for capital investment in 2008, it is quite the opposite in 2009 — 21% of enterprises investing in NFC will be investing in 2009 vs. 13% in 2010 and 2011,” according to the report. The Co-operative Food has started trialing contactless payments in its small shops and convenience stores in an effort to generate a better means for customers to pay for goods, according to Retail Week.

Ingenico has announced that it will integrate First Data’s TransArmor data encryption and tokenization technologies across its line of Telium point of sale terminals.

According to the partners, the addition of TransArmor will provide greater security to U.S. retail customers making EMV, NFC and magnetic stripe payments on Telium reader products.

Chinese handset manufacturer ZTE has partnered with Turkcell, Turkey’s largest mobile operator, to offer a new SIM-based NFC mobile device for the Turkish market.

The Turkcell T11 handset (aka the ZTE Racer II) can be used to pay for both highway toll payments and items at the point of sale with a simple tap against a contactless reader.
