Fraudsters make recommendations for improving UK ID cards

Following a speech criticizing the new UK card system by American fraudster Frank Abagnale, TSSI Systems, developer of the new card system, agreed that more needs to be done to eliminate the possibility for impersonation, according to a Security Park article. Concerns about the system revolved mostly around storing and encryption of data.


Some of the measures to impede identity fraud from the new system included algorithmic encryption of the data, storing data on a separate server from any other personal information. However, the final suggestion was for storage of the biometric data on the card as other European countries have already stipulated for future programs. Such measures would keep the possessor of the card as the sole possessor of the data as well.

Intercede has announced the release of Service Pack 1 for its biometric identity and credential management system MyID PIV v9.

The upgrades included in the new service pack are bringing Personal Identification Verification (PIV), PIV-I and PIV-C credential issuance into one system. Additional upgrades in the service pack are aimed at reducing time and costs involved in help desk functions by improving card expiration date control, policy control, offline unlock, self-service PIN reset and reinstating and re-provisioning of cards all from the system GUI.

A new survey from Euro Kartensysteme shows that Germans are starting to embrace the idea of contactless and NFC payments.

Out of 1,040 Germans aged 18-59, 43% responded that they would like to make contactless payments if given the opportunity, of which 58% percent would make their payments with a debit card card, 41% with a credit card and 50% with an NFC phone.

Russia has pushed back the launch of its universal eID card to January 2013, reports The Moscow Times.

Originally scheduled to roll out this month, the card is supposed to function as an electronic ID, driver’s license, proof of auto insurance, ATM card and immigration document, along with other possible features.
