New Intermec tag enhances lateral reads

Tuesday, November 4, 2008

Supply chain solutions specialist Intermec has introduced a new RFID tag designed to improve read rates when used in systems involving forklift-mounted scanners. The Enterprise Lateral Transmitting tag, called the IT67, offers both standard and edge reading performance, enabling the tags to be read when not facing scanners mounted in portals or forklifts.

“We designed the IT67 specifically to track returnable containers for automotive manufacturers and their suppliers, giving them the ability to read data in either a portal or forklift application thus simplifying their tracking processes and minimizing their infrastructure investment requirements,” says Ray Cronin, vice president and general manager of RFID for Intermec.

Intermec is targeting the IT67 at industries that track large metal containers, including the automotive, postal and waste management industries. The tag is intended to enable logistics operators to streamline operations and track assets more effectively without the need for scanning “chokepoints.”

The reusable passive tag can be mounted to containers with a variety of methods, from screws to adhesive strips. It meets Gen 2 and 18000-6C requirements, is equipped housed in a rugged casing with a thin profile. Read range is projected to reach up to 26 feet. [end]

Multimodal biometric security provider ImageWare Systems Inc. has released version 2.0 of its Biometric Engine (BE) physical security identification product.

This product is designed for airports, seaports and other critical points-of-access for government and private enterprises. This update takes into account the SAFE Port Act, which requires foreign shippers to secure cargo being shipped to the U.S. and ensure the identity of those loading it. Shippers must manage this by 2013.

NXP Semiconductor demonstrated an RFID- and NFC-enabled smart washing machine at the Embedded World exhibition in Nuremberg, Germany.

The washing machine can detect what is placed in the laundry and reads information about the fabric type and color from RFID-tagged buttons. This also helps to avoid mixing white and dark laundry, and optimizes the washing program based on characteristics it reads from both the clothing and the detergent itself.
