FBI releases technology assessment for biometrics

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

The FBI’s Biometric Center of Excellence (BCOE) has released their State-of-the-Art Biometrics Excellence Roadmap (SABER) Technology Assessment. The SABER assessment was developed by the MITRE Corporation as a way to measure where certain biometric technologies are in their lifeline to help expand the FBI’s Certified Product List for biometric products.

The SABER also touches on the performance evaluations of products, research in the field and the biometrics market.

To complete the assessment, multiple site visits were needed to understand different facets of biometric use including gaming facilities and detention facilities. Besides getting an understanding for how different products are being used in the different industries, officials also gained knowledge on current limitations that should be considered for future developments in the technology. The SABER Technology Assessment is currently available online at the BCOE Web site. [end]
