Convenience stores may look to biometrics for extra security

Due to the failing economy, fears over petty theft in retail outlets such as convenience stores have been on the rise, according to an article from Convenience Store Decisions. Among the recommended solutions being offered is the implementation of biometric systems to assist with anything from theft deterrents to ID checking.


An initial use of biometric systems for stores, such as 7-eleven, would be to incorporate biometrics into its ID checking for sales on tobacco and alcohol.

One area that Joe LaRocca, vice president of loss prevention for the National Retail Federation, has pointed to with regards to incorporating biometrics is the in-store safes. While he acknowledges that most convenience stores are independently owned or franchised, biometric technology has dropped significantly in price over the past years and the added security could be very worthwhile. Additional uses that are being looked at is its use in payroll for time and attendance tracking of employees.

Oracle has released a new version of Oracle Retail Point-of-Service that aims to increase security, operational efficiency and functionality in part by integrating biometrics.

Oracle partnered with DigitalPersonal to add integrated biometrics to the POS package. Users of the software will login using their fingerprint, which will replace the need for PINs or passwords. This feature intends to reduce fraud by eliminating the possibility of unauthorized employees using a manager ID or swipe card to access the POS and approve overrides.

Superdrug, one of Britain’s largest beauty and health retailers, has introduced contactless payment for its in-store customers, according to Retail Gazette.

Created by Streamline and Visa Europe, the contactless system will enable customers to make payments of up to £15 (approx. USD $23) by simply waving their contactless bank card at the more than 50 participating Superdrug stores in London and Liverpool.

Envoy Data Corporation announced a partnership with biometrics developer Zvetco Biometrics that will see Envoy offering Zvetco’s fingerprint scanners to its clients.

The biometric readers now carried by Envoy have been designed with both convenience and performance in mind for use in the enterprise, financial, health care, gaming and retail industries. The new partnership means an expanded product list and more options for Envoy’s clients and an expanded customer-base for Zvetco.

Vaughan Public Libraries in Ontario, Ca. are in the final stages of implementing the Fastrac RFID system.

The Fastrac RFID will provide greater convenience to patrons, time savings for the staff and additional security for the library itself. Provided by the partnership between VTLS and mk Sorting Systems, the installation will include several self-checkout kiosks, staff stations, RFID gates, tagging stations, tagging wands and tags.

A new survey from Euro Kartensysteme shows that Germans are starting to embrace the idea of contactless and NFC payments.

Out of 1,040 Germans aged 18-59, 43% responded that they would like to make contactless payments if given the opportunity, of which 58% percent would make their payments with a debit card card, 41% with a credit card and 50% with an NFC phone.
